Terms of Service

1. Agreement to Terms
By creating an account or using the Lockin mobile application ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.
These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and "Lockin" SIA, a company registered in the Republic of Latvia (Registration Nr. 40203724495) ("Lockin," "we," "us," or "our").
2. Eligibility
To use Lockin, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age (or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher)
- Have the legal capacity to enter into binding agreements
- Have the legal right to make payments and receive refunds in your jurisdiction
Lockin involves real financial transactions. By using the App, you confirm that you meet these eligibility requirements. We reserve the right to request proof of age or identity at any time.
3. Account
3.1 Registration
You must sign in using Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.
3.2 Account Security
You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at support@lockinapp.org if you suspect unauthorized access.
4. The Service
Lockin is an accountability app that uses financial commitment to help you build habits. You stake real money on self-improvement challenges. If you complete your challenge, your money is returned. If you fail, your stake is forfeited. Challenge outcomes depend entirely on your own actions. See Section 6 for full details on forfeiture.
5. Challenges
5.1 Challenge Types
Lockin offers the following challenge types, each verified by device sensors or APIs:

5.2 Challenge Creation
When you create a challenge, you define:
- The challenge type and parameters (e.g., location, step target, screen time limit)
- The duration (number of days)
- The stake amount (subject to the minimum displayed in the App)
- The charity that will benefit from any forfeited funds
Once you confirm and pay, your challenge begins according to the schedule you set. Challenges cannot be cancelled or modified after payment is processed.
5.3 Challenge Verification
Verification is automated using your device's sensors and data. You must:
- Grant the required permissions (location, health, screen time) for your challenge type
- Use the same device throughout the challenge
- Check in daily within the required timeframe
Lockin relies on data from your device and third-party health platforms. While we take reasonable measures to ensure accuracy, we cannot guarantee that sensor data is always perfectly accurate.
5.4 Challenge Completion
A challenge is completed successfully when you meet the requirements for every instance (day) within the challenge period. Successfully completed instances are refunded to your original payment method.
A challenge instance is failed when you do not meet the daily requirement by the deadline. Failed instances are forfeited according to Section 6.
5.5 Friend Challenges
You may send challenges to friends on the platform. The challenge creator sets the terms. Both participants must agree before the challenge begins. Friend challenges follow the same verification, completion, and forfeiture rules as individual challenges.
5.6 Referral Program
Lockin may offer rewards for referring new users (e.g., free Pro trial months). A referral is only counted when the invited user enters your referral code during the onboarding process. Referral codes entered after onboarding will not be credited. Lockin reserves the right to modify or discontinue the referral program at any time.
6. Forfeiture and Charitable Donations
6.1 How Forfeiture Works
If you fail to complete a challenge instance, your staked amount for that instance is forfeited to Lockin as a service fee. The forfeited amount becomes the property of Lockin.
Lockin commits to donating a minimum of 81.11% of all forfeited stakes to registered charitable organizations. The remaining portion (up to 18.89%) covers payment processing fees, platform operations, and service costs.
6.2 You Are Not the Donor
Forfeited funds are not charitable donations made by you. When you fail a challenge, you forfeit your stake to Lockin. Lockin then independently donates to charity as part of its corporate social responsibility program.
You will not receive a tax deduction, donation receipt, or charitable acknowledgment for forfeited amounts. These are service fees paid to Lockin, not charitable contributions made on your behalf.
6.3 Charity Selection
During challenge creation, you select which charity you would like to benefit from your forfeiture. While Lockin makes reasonable efforts to direct donations to your chosen charity, we reserve the right to redirect donations to an alternative registered charity if the selected organization becomes unavailable, loses its charitable status, or is otherwise unable to receive funds.
6.4 Donation Batching
Forfeited stakes are allocated to a cumulative pool for each charity. When the pool for a given charity reaches $2,000 USD (or equivalent), Lockin donates that amount to the charity. If the $2,000 threshold is not reached before the end of a calendar quarter, whatever amount has accumulated in that charity's pool is donated at quarter-end. This batching approach ensures efficient processing and minimizes transaction costs on charitable transfers.
6.5 Transparency
Lockin will publish an annual transparency report detailing total forfeited amounts, total charitable donations made, and the recipient organizations.
7. Payments
7.1 Payment Processing
Payments are processed by Stripe, a PCI-compliant third-party payment processor. Lockin does not store your credit card number, CVV, or full billing details. By making a payment, you also agree to Stripe's Terms of Service.
7.2 Payment Amounts
When you stake on a challenge, the total charge includes:
- Your stake amount (divided across challenge instances)
- A payment processing fee (currently 3.98%, covering Stripe transaction costs)
The processing fee is non-refundable, even if your challenge is completed successfully and your stake is returned.
7.3 Currency
Payments are charged in the currency displayed in the App at the time of your commitment. Refunds are always issued in the same currency and amount as the original payment.
If your bank or card issuer uses a different currency than the one displayed in the App, your financial institution may apply currency conversion on both the original charge and the refund. Because exchange rates fluctuate, the converted amounts may differ slightly — for example, your bank may convert €10 to $10.50 on the day of your stake, but convert the €10 refund back to $10.35 two weeks later. In both cases, Lockin charged and refunded €10. Any difference is determined by your bank's exchange rate and fees, not by Lockin.
We do not control or compensate for currency conversion fees, exchange rate fluctuations, or rounding differences applied by your financial institution.
8. Refunds
8.1 Successful Challenge Completion
When you successfully complete a challenge instance, your stake for that instance is refunded to your original payment method. Refunds are processed automatically and typically arrive within 5-10 business days, depending on your payment provider.
8.2 Refund Requests
If you believe a challenge instance was incorrectly marked as failed due to a technical error, you may request a manual review. Refund requests must be submitted within 1 day of the instance's deadline expiring.
Requests submitted after this window will not be considered. To submit a request, use the in-app support channel (accessible from your Profile screen) with your challenge details and a description of the issue.
8.3 Voluntary Donations
If you choose to voluntarily donate your refund to charity after a successful challenge instance (via the "Donate Anyway" option), that decision is final and non-refundable.
8.4 Refund Abuse
Lockin reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that submit repeated or fraudulent refund requests. Patterns that may constitute abuse include:
- Submitting refund requests for the majority of failed instances
- Providing false or misleading information in refund requests
- Deliberately creating conditions to trigger technical failures
We review refund patterns on a per-account basis. If your account is flagged for refund abuse, you will be notified before any action is taken.
8.5 Refund Destination
All refunds are returned exclusively to the original payment method used to create the challenge. Under no circumstances will Lockin transfer, redirect, or pay out funds to any third party, alternative account, or payment method other than the one used for the original transaction. Lockin is not a money transfer service, payment intermediary, or escrow agent. Requests to redirect refunds to another person or account will be denied.
8.6 What Is Not Refundable
The following are not eligible for refund:
- Failed challenge instances (these are forfeited per Section 6)
- Payment processing fees
- Voluntary donations to charity
- Subscription fees for the current billing period (see Section 9)
- Challenges where the user failed to grant required device permissions
9. Subscriptions (Lockin Pro)
9.1 Pricing
Lockin Pro is available as a monthly or annual subscription. The price displayed in the App or your device's app store at the time of purchase is the price you will be charged. Prices may vary by region and currency.
9.2 Billing
Subscriptions are billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Billing is managed by your respective app store, not directly by Lockin. Your subscription automatically renews at the end of each billing period unless cancelled.
9.3 Cancellation
You may cancel your subscription at any time through your app store's subscription management settings:
- Android: Google Play Store → Subscriptions
- iOS: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You retain Pro access until then. We do not offer partial refunds for unused subscription time.
9.4 Free Trials
Lockin may offer free Pro trials as rewards for completing challenges, referring friends, or other promotional activities. Trial terms, including duration, will be clearly displayed at the time of the offer. When a promotional trial expires, your account returns to the free tier. Promotional trials do not automatically convert to a paid subscription.
10. User Conduct
You agree not to:
- Cheat or manipulate challenge verification by any means
- Exploit referral programs through fraudulent means
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App or its systems
- Use the App for money laundering or any other illegal financial activity
- Harass, threaten, or abuse other users through the platform's social features
- Impersonate another person or entity
Violation of these rules may result in immediate account termination, forfeiture of all active stakes, and permanent ban from the platform.
11. Account Suspension and Termination
11.1 By You
You may delete your account at any time from the Profile > Account > Delete Account screen within the app. If you have active challenges, you may choose to wait for them to complete or forfeit them immediately. Upon deletion, your account is anonymized, personal data is removed, and any active challenges are forfeited.
11.2 By Lockin
We may suspend or terminate your account if you:
- Violate these Terms of Service
- Engage in refund abuse (Section 8.4)
- Engage in cheating or challenge manipulation (Section 10)
- Engage in fraudulent or illegal activity
11.3 Effect of Termination
Upon account termination:
- Active challenges will be forfeited. No refunds will be issued for stakes on active challenges at the time of termination.
- Pending refunds for already-completed instances will still be processed.
- Subscriptions are managed through the App Store or Google Play. Lockin does not handle subscription renewals or cancellations. You must cancel your subscription directly through your device's app store settings. Deleting your account does not automatically cancel your subscription.
- Personal data will be handled according to our Privacy Policy.
12. Intellectual Property
The Lockin App, including its design, code, branding, content, and features, is the property of "Lockin" SIA. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes in accordance with these Terms.
You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or lease any part of the App without our written consent.
13. Disclaimers
13.1 No Health or Financial Advice
Lockin is an accountability tool, not a health, fitness, or financial advisory service. Consult appropriate professionals before starting any fitness program or making financial commitments.
13.2 Service Availability
We strive to keep Lockin available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. We are not liable for temporary outages, maintenance periods, or third-party service failures (e.g., Stripe, device sensor APIs). If a service outage prevents you from completing a check-in, you may submit a refund request per Section 8.2.
13.3 Verification Accuracy
Challenge verification depends on device sensors, operating system APIs, and third-party services. While we take reasonable measures to ensure accuracy, we cannot guarantee that location, step count, or screen time data is always perfectly precise. The refund request process (Section 8.2) exists to address genuine technical errors.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:
- Lockin's total liability to you for any claims arising from your use of the App shall not exceed the total amount you have paid to Lockin in the 12 months preceding the claim.
- Lockin is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill.
- Lockin is not liable for any losses resulting from your failure to complete a challenge, whether due to personal circumstances, device malfunction, or any other reason.
These limitations apply to all claims, whether based on contract, tort, or any other legal theory.
15. Dispute Resolution
15.1 Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Latvia, without regard to conflict of law principles.
15.2 Informal Resolution
Before filing any formal claim, you agree to contact us at support@lockinapp.org and attempt to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.
15.3 Jurisdiction
If informal resolution fails, any dispute shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Republic of Latvia.
15.4 EU Consumer Rights
If you are a consumer in the European Union, nothing in these Terms affects your statutory consumer rights under applicable EU law, including the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence.
16. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:
- Posting a notice within the App
- Updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document
- Sending a notification for significant changes that affect your rights
Your continued use of Lockin after updated Terms are posted constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree with updated Terms, you must stop using the App and close your account.
17. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
18. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Lockin regarding your use of the App. They supersede all prior agreements, representations, and understandings.
